It seems that, fairly recently, computers have begun replacing the mainstays of the American household. Cell phones are making landlines irrelevant; e-readers are gaining popularity over physical books; and personal computers are being used for watching movies and television almost as much as the traditional TV set. There are a lot of websites like direct.tv that even replaced books, pamphlets and having to call customer service. The possibilities for visual entertainment on the Internet have been steadily increasing for several years. Many networks provide full episodes of their shows online for free and services like Netflix and Hulu make watching movies instantly on your computer a snap.

With the substantial expansion of computers into the realm of the visual comes an increase in demand for better monitors. A high quality monitor, such as the Dell UltraSharp U2711, could be the answer to this demand. What follows is an analysis of this particular product.

At nearly $1100, the 27-inch U2711 is not for the casual computer user. With such a high price, though, comes superior performance and design. Features of the monitor include:

An astounding 2560 x 1440 screen resolution

More than one billion colors

Customizable color options

16:9 widescreen aspect ratio

Multiple connection ports, such as HDMI, DVI-D, VGA and USB

A design centered on the comfort and enjoyment of the viewer

If you think about it, lesser televisions can be purchased for the price of the U2711. The monitor can be used for anything a television can be used for but has the bonus advantage of being connected to the Internet. Those who love their high-definition TVs will be more than satisfied with the HD aptitude of the U2711, too. Imagine if you used two U2711s to create a dual-screen monitor. Your home office could almost be transformed into an IMAX movie theater.

Switching from television set to computer screen isn’t an obvious move for everyone, but the market is rife with great monitors like the Dell UltraSharp U2711 that are just begging for the chance to amaze.

Choosing healthy options when dining in or eating out is important to maintaining good health throughout a person’s lifespan. Those who indulge frequently in junk or processed foods can suffer from problems such as heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity. Some cultures place a lot of emphasis on food, and many social gatherings revolve around the cuisine that will be served. Adjusting the mindset and behaviors from a young age is important in learning how to eat properly for life.

The first way parents can teach their children about good eating habits is by example. Keeping plenty of fresh fruits and veggies in the refrigerator, munching on nuts or dried fruit for snacks, and serving produce alongside meats and starches at mealtime can help children learn what constitutes a balanced meal. Some foods might be advertised as healthy options, but when reading the nutritional facts, it might become apparent that this is simply untrue. Understanding the food pyramid and what kind of fuel bodies need in order to work properly will help children to make better choices.

Favorite treats shouldn’t be avoided completely, as this can lead to feelings of deprivation or binging when no one is watching. Special occasions are certainly cause for desserts and other tasty treats. Yo-yo dieting and other unsafe eating trends should be avoided as well, as they can cause rapid changes in weight and rob the body of vitamins and nutrients. This can lead to malnourishment or dehydration.

As long as all culinary items are enjoyed in moderation, and combined with plenty of outdoor activity and exercise, children and parents alike will enjoy long lives of healthy eating.

No matter what kind of files you’re sharing, you’re probably always wondering, “Is this safe? Is this download going to be the one that introduces the killer virus into my operating system?” You don’t have to be a constant worrier over your file sharing. Just use some sound techniques to protect yourself.

Regardless of how secure you think your information is, you’re still file sharing. It’s possible that a virus could get tangled up in a file you’re sending or a file you’re downloading from a site. Make sure your computer’s anti-virus software and malware detector are up to date.

When you’re in doubt about the safety of a particular file, don’t download it. Even if it’s something you’ve really wanted for a long time, don’t introduce it to your computer. The risk is just not worth the possible reward. Remember that peer-to-peer file sharing is a risky venture in and of itself so if you notice any red flags, steer clear of that file. It could be a vehicle for allowing hackers to access your personal information or send harmful code to your computer.

Be sure to think twice before you lower your fire wall. Some file sharing sites may tell you that your fire wall is preventing you from downloading a file. The fire wall is there to halt potentially dangerous data from entering your computer. Don’t be so quick to open fire wall ports just because a site asked you to do it.

Finally, avoid uploading or downloading material that’s protected by copyright laws. While you may not run the risk of getting a virus, you could face prosecution.

Stories of computer viruses, hackers, and identity theft can make anyone on edge about the security of their computer. Hackers are constantly finding new ways to gather personal information through computers and viruses are always being made that can break through software. Luckily, the brightest of computer scientists and engineers are also always making new and more secure ways to protect your digital databases. All you have to do is keep yourself updated on the newest and best ways of protecting yourself.

The Internet can give you all the information you need about which security softwares you need. It is usually a simple task to get first-person accounts of how well certain firewalls and antivirus softwares work by simply looking for online forums about computers. These forums can usually give you all the information about software programs you will need, from the effectiveness of software to how customizable a program is, so you can decide what kinds of sites are allowed through your firewall.

Security software is also available in every price range, from professional grade, multi-thousand dollar programs to simple, free programs. Many free security systems actually work very well for a personal computer, though you may need a more thorough program if you keep very important documents on your computer or if you have reason to believe your computer might be targeted specifically.

Computers have become very important in our lives today. Just like everyone likes to know that their house and car are safe, you should also want to know that your computer is safe.

With each new and improved aspect of Internet surfing and online privacy, comes new and improved ways to steal information. Learning what to share and when or when not to share, is the key.

How information is collected

Cookies – for Internet users, cookies help users gain access to websites not attainable unless users accept them. These cookies consist of data stored on the user’s computer. Developers can use these tracking cookies to track a user’s activity on the Internet, connecting them to a user’s social networking site profile. A profile can give clues to a member’s browsing history. Ads targeted for that user, based on their internet activity, will appear alongside their social networking profile.

Even though the majority of businesses use cookies for legitimate purposes, others will use them for malicious reasons.

Uploaded Photographs

With so many technological and scientific advancements in the area of crime solving, digital photography is no exception. Studies showed that people could use profile pictures on social networking sites to locate and track an individual. Pictures taken by iPhones include the latitude and longitude, a feature that owners do not always disable manually.

Search Engines

Users may reveal personal information while utilizing search engines. Search engines can use the terms entered or even the time a user performed a search to gather information. Ironically, search engine developers admit to retaining information in order to prove a better service or to protect users from fraud.

Log-Ins

To protect information obtained by sites requiring a user to log in, users should always log out and either clear history and cookies, or set your browser to automatically clear all passwords, log ins, and Internet history each time a user closes the browser.

Dozens of movies and television shows depict computers and robots taking over the world, and attempting to destroy humanity. Could that ever really happen? The debate rages on and probably will for a long time to come.

After all, a computer is merely the sum of information fed to it by a human, right. When something goes wrong with a computer, we blame the program created by a human. Some will argue that a super fast computer can calculate mathematical operations, or play chess, against a human and win. Others will answer that the person who programmed the game and the math program is the one who is super smart and super fast.

Unfortunately, one man who thrived to answer that question, died over 50 years ago. His name was Alan Turing, a mathematician, logician, and a computer scientist, born on June 23, 1912, in London, England.

Alan Turing developed a test, called The Turing Test, which tested a machine’s ability to display intelligence. A text-only test between a human and a computer engaging in a conversation, another human had to guess which one is the human, and which one is the computer.

Turing first mentioned this test in a paper he wrote in 1950 titled, Computing Machinery and Intelligence. The first line of the writing was “I propose to consider the question, Can machines think? Turing goes on to explain that the term, thinking, is hard to define, and therefore he rewords the original question, asking if a computer is able to fare better in the Turing test than a human.

Although highly criticized since its introduction, philosophers use The Turing Test to argue on the side of the possibility of artificial intelligence.

The first Internet worm to gain widespread attention was the Morris Worm. Robert Tappan Morris created and then distributed, the Morris Worm on November 2, 1988, by the Internet. According to the creator of the very first computer virus, the intention of the worm was to count the number of computers connected to the Internet.

The Morris Worm’s design flaw, which its creator claimed he did not know about. Morris designed the worm to verify the existence of the infection on each computer it found. Believing that computer users trying to defeat the Morris Worm would instruct the computer to give a false positive, Morris directed the worm to copy itself anyhow, no matter the status of the infection.

By doing so, the worm replicated itself one out of seven times, and it spread rapidly, infecting many computers a number of times over. When Robert Morris heard about this, he admitted he should have tried it out on a simulator first.

The Morris Worm took advantage of numerous vulnerabilities to gain access to its targets in several ways:

Weak passwords

A bug Unix Sendmail Program

Flaws in trusted hosts’ features

The worm spread quickly from computer to computer, and infected several thousand computers. The loss of productivity because of the Morris worm was believed to be somewhere between twenty and five-hundred thousand dollars worth of damage.

The Morris Worm resulted in the first conviction under the 1986 Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, an act intended to reduce the cracking of computer systems. In the US v. Morris case, the court charged Morris March 7, 1991, of causing damage and gaining unauthorized access to federal interest computers.

1961

MIT’s Computation Center demonstrated the first time-sharing operating systems in 1961. The Compatible Time-Sharing System allowed users to log onto an IBM computer from remote terminals. It also enabled users to store files online on a disk. It presaged electronic mail, which began in 1965, as a way for multiple users to communicate using time-sharing mainframe computers.

Using a File Transfer Protocol, or FTP, users can copy a file from one host to another using Transmission Control Protocol-based network, such as the Internet. It uses separate data connections and control between the client and the server. The first FTP applications implemented standard commands and syntax.

1971

Michael S. Hart founded Project Gutenberg, the oldest digital library. It started as an effort to archive and digitize cultural works, encouraging the creation and the distribution of eBooks. By November of 2010, Project Gutenberg claimed to have more than 34,000 items in the collection.

Citibank, Chase Manhattan, Chemical, and Manufacturers Hanover began to offer home-banking services by telephone, using a touch-tone keypad to give instructions to the bank. In the late 1980′s, banks began offering online services using the videotex system that delivered pages of text to a user in a computer-like format.

A Network Working Group from the University of Minnesota released The Gopher protocol in 1981. They designed it to retrieve, distribute, and search for documents over the Internet. It was a precursor to the World Wide Web, although some enthusiasts still use the Gopher protocol today.

Among the many benefits of space travel, perhaps the most important are the advances in medicine and the diagnosis and treatment of many disorders.

A few of the computer technologies NASA developed during the early decades of the space program are:

Computer-Aided Technology (CAT scan) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

NASA used this technology to enhance pictures taken of the moon for the Apollo Program. Hospitals, clinics, and doctors now use this computer technology to detect tumors and other abnormalities in the human body.

LED (Light-Emitting Diode)

NASA used LED technology in plant growth experiments aboard the Space Shuttle. Oncologists use this technology as a form of chemotherapy to treat brain tumors in children. This treatment helps ease discomfort and pain normally associated with cancer treatments.

Cardiovascular Treatments

NASA scientists and engineers monitored the astronauts and their spacecraft using telemetry systems. Cardiologists used this technology to develop pacemakers. Hospitals’ Intensive Care Units use this technology to monitor the vitals of patients. Doctors monitor the function of pacemakers with the communication technology NASA used to observe the gap between orbiting satellites and Earth situations.

NASA developed fuel pump technology for the Space Shuttle that cardiologists used to make a mini-ventricular-assist pump used in artificial heart implants.

Breast Cancer Detection

The Hubble Space Telescope contains silicon chips used to convert light from a star into digital images. Doctors use this technology to detect spots in breast tissue. Doctors can use a needle to analyze the tissue by locating the exact spot. This procedure is less evasive since it is non-surgical, and primarily, it reduces the amount of pain and scarring involved in breast biopsies. Secondary benefits include less exposure to radiation, time, and money.

The benefits of space computer technology applied to medical advancements benefits everyone, as anyone who has been through these medical procedures can tell us.

According to many studies, Facebook is the number one out of ten most blocked sites by employers. Other sites on surveys include the usual suspects, YouTube and MySpace. The top sites are easy to understand because people spend the majority of their online, on these sites. Some on the list, while they may be understandable, can be disturbing, such as pornographic sites and pornographic magazine sites.

While most people are not prudish enough to believe that people still like to look at the pictures and occasionally read the stories in adult magazines, they are shocked to find out that employees would actually spend a portion of their workday on these sites. If they did not do that, employers would not feel the need to block them.

Unless you work for one of the adult magazines or you are doing research at work regarding social networking sites, you really have no business being on any of these top ten blocked sites. Companies should ban employees from using the Internet for anything that is not work-related.

To avoid employees from using their computer at work for personal time, employers must use Newton’s First Law of Motion:

· An object that is at rest will stay at rest unless an unbalanced force acts upon it.

· An object that is in motion will not change its velocity unless an unbalanced force acts upon it.

If employers allow their employees to use the computer for personal reasons, they will continue to do so until the employer prevents it. Employers should block or prevent their employees from using the Internet altogether, unless it is on work-related websites.

If there is a large enough compilation of information to produce a survey such as the top ten blocked sites, then that means there are far too many employees not working during work hours.

Many people believe that there are no networking opportunities available if you receive an online education. However, an online education is no different than an education received in a brick-and-mortar college, and that includes the availability of networking opportunities. Graduates have the same type of networking opportunities available, regardless of where they received their degree. The only difference is that networking as an online college graduate requires the use of the Internet and a desire to build a personal platform in which to broadcast your experience, education, and personal brand. If you are a recent online college graduate or considering online education, here’s a look at some of the networking opportunities that are available to you.

Online Forums

Many online colleges have a dedicated online forum where current and former students can go to connect with each other. These forums will sometimes have a section dedicated to employers or job posting that allows any student to start to market themselves. If your college does not have this type of forum online, there are sites like earnmydegree.com that can be used as a resource to help you find forums of this nature.

Social Media Outlets

Social media websites can be a great way for online students to network and broadcast themselves to future employers. Most social media websites have networks that you can join that will allow you to share your information and make connections that can help you develop your own personal brand or find a new job.

With a little work and dedication, any online college graduate can have the same opportunities that other graduates have to build powerful networks.

As computers become a more widely utilized commodity, more people are connecting to the internet. In addition to computers, there are a wide array of different mobile devices that make connecting to the Internet from practically anywhere a breeze. Through this technology, wireless Internet capability has become the standard, allowing people with devices that contain wireless capabilities to access the Internet. This technology has drastically made accessing the Internet in general a much easier task. People can jump on to find an answer to a specific question they might have via utilizing one of the popular online search engines, or check their email as they are waiting for the bus to pick them up. However, with the ease of access that wireless Internet presents, it can also present potential dangers for those who are unaware of how to properly secure their connection from outside sources.

The biggest mistake people who own wireless routers make is to not set a secure password that is required to access the network. By not setting the password, anyone that has wireless connectivity capabilities that comes within range of your router signal will be able to identify your network and connect to it. This poses a number of problems; for one, they can access the shared files and other information that might be open to all users of the network. Additionally, by piggybacking your network connection, depending on what they are doing, they can be absorbing large amounts of bandwidth; thus slowing down your experience on the web.

As a result of these potential issues, it is vital to ensure you set a password set for your wireless network. Obviously, this is a fairly simplistic task that everyone can do; and ironically enough despite how simple it is, it negates about 90% of the potential dangers that instantaneous flow toward your network.

Being online, and buying online, is so commonplace anymore that no one thinks twice about it. That’s good news for people who want to start up an online business, provided they can market themselves well enough to bring in customers. Before you invest too much in your business, or if you already have a business that’s struggling and needs some help, you need to take the time to find out what your customers and potential customers really need and want from you. If you don’t know that, you aren’t going to be able to effectively market your company to the people you’re trying to reach.

One of the best ways to get information from people is through online surveys. These have become a lot more popular today with online retailers, business websites, and other people who need to get information from online shoppers. They’re easy, they’re convenient, and you can tailor them to all sorts of situations. In other words, you can have a different one for new customers, existing customers, and potential customers. Those are great opportunities to find out a lot of information, and you don’t want to assume that one survey will fit all of the people who come to your site. The more diversified (within reason) your categories are, the better off you’ll be, overall.

If you really want your business to grow and you want to see your customer service improve, surveys are the way to go. You need to find out what the people who come to your website are truly looking for. That’s especially true of the people who don’t buy anything from you. What were they after, that you couldn’t provide? Is there a way you could provide it in the future? Is anyone else looking for it, too? Answering those kinds of questions will help your business grow and succeed.

Since the widespread inception of the Internet into the average household, email has grown drastically. More people are utilizing the ease of email currently than ever before. With the increased efficiency of wireless capabilities in conjunction with the wide array of different mobile devices; the use of email is in short, booming. However, with the wide use of email for many different aspects of peoples lives, there comes the potential for dangers and various scams that malicious entities try to utilize in order to victimize unsuspecting users. These scams come in a wide variety of different forms, and can all cause detrimental effects to the end-user whom ends up as the victim.

The most common ways that these entities work is by obtaining email information for a number of different individuals, and utilizing them as a source to send automated messages to. These automated messages appear to the unsuspecting user as coming from a viable source; whether a popular and recognizable retailer such as Target, or a popular shipping company such as the Post Office or United Parcel Service. Generally, they will either include an attachment, or request personal information regarding a package or item you know nothing about. Unfortunately, many people take the bait and either open up the file or input their information due to curiosity and or confusion regarding the issue.

In many cases, the file attachment is an executable virus that requires a download and installation. The programmers tend to make it appear as if it a simple form that needs to be filled out by the recipient in order to remedy the issue in question. However, more times than not, once it has been downloaded, it turns out to be a virus that runs rampant through the system causing any amount of damage or problematic issues. Ensure you are cautious regarding emails you do not recognize.

Computers are becoming the staple of any modern household that provides a way to access the Internet for various tasks. Whether members of the family are enrolled in an online educational institution, or they like to keep in touch daily with relatives that live across the country, or in another country at that; the computer, and more importantly, the Internet is the means in which to accomplish these tasks. However, as technology increased, and the demands of the Internet and various other activities performed on the computer begin to increase with this technology, some people are finding that their computers are becoming outdated. When most people think of the cost that typically correlates with the purchase of a new computer, they tend to tell themselves that it is out of the question, and their current machine will suffice. As a result of this, as each year goes by, their computer becomes more and more outdated, and cannot perform many of the standard tasks that are prevalent in the online world.

Fortunately, one aspect of the bad economy that has actually turned out to be somewhat positive is the drastic drop in computer prices. Part of the reason why computer prices have dropped so much is due to the fact they are utilized so often now a days. However, the economy has caused people to not venture out to make purchases as much as they did prior to the recession. As a result of this, companies have been forced to lower prices in order to appeal to this new brand of cautious consumer.

There are droves of powerful brands and models on the market that vastly out perform computers even from a couple of years ago. Increases in technology have made it possible for manufacturers to pump out performance machines at lower costs than ever before. Machines that would have been considered souped up super computers five ears ago are being released as the standard in specifications, with higher end models exhibiting ridiculous specifications. As a result of this, there has never been a better time to find yourself a viable computer upgrade.

Practically everyone has en email address that they utilize on a regular basis. No matter the generation, young or old, email has become a pivotal aspect of our society in terms of how we communicate with family, friends, and in a business sense. As a result of this, millions of emails get sent out on a daily basis that range from simple salutations to intricate project proposals. However, there is one aspect of emailing that can be somewhat dangerous, and many people are unaware of the potential detrimental effects that this element can cause to their computer. The problem being referred to is transferable files that are attached to emails. The unfortunate fact of email, and the Internet in general is that there are malicious entities always working behind the scenes in an attempt to scam people and or infect their computers with executable viruses. Email is a large target for these entities because of the mass volume that flows through various services.

One of the most widely used ways for a potential hacker to gain access to a computer via a virus is by sending a file to someones email that is the virus in its dormant form, requesting that the person open the file and install it. The majority of the time, these emails are disguised as a reputable entity such as The Post Office or a favorite retailer stating that something is wrong, or that the potential victim has won something and needs to open the file to view a specific document. For the most part, it is simple to tell that these emails are fraudulent, however, people who are less experienced and slightly more naive take the bait and open the files. When the file is open, the user unknowingly installs the malicious software onto their machine and are usually completely unaware that it is running in the background.

There are many other types of viruses that can be transferred via an attached email file; As such, ensure you completely avoid opening email attachments unless they come from a 100% trusted contact.

As the Internet has become more popular over the years, more people who have less experience than others are pouring onto the web. These people present opportunities for hackers and other developers of malicious software to victimize through various tactics. One way in which these unethical entities launch their attacks is via a variety of different viruses. Unfortunately, the people who are developing these viruses are fairly innovative and underhanded in their tactics as getting the virus on a specific computer. Among the most popular ways to get a computer infected is through peer-to-peer sharing services that used to be extremely popular, and still remain a way that people transfer and share various files.

The problem with peer to peer file sharing is that people are put into an atmosphere in which they can practically download anything and everything. These atmospheres present a slew of different material that range from pirated versions of popular software, to videos and games. It is extremely easy for a hacker to write an executable program, rename it something that is popular among the various down-loaders, and serve it. For the most part, people will notice that the item in which they are downloading has the .exe extension, throw a red flag immediately and stop downloading it. However, with the vast amount of new Internet users that are unaware of checking file extensions, as well as the fact there are many people online who are unethical in their practices, these executable files get downloaded and installed on a regular basis.

The viruses that come attached to these downloadable files can range from practically anything. Among the most widely used are viruses that act as a gateway for the developer to access the computer, otherwise known as a Trojan virus. Additionally, these gateway viruses can also act as a hub for other viruses in that once they have infected your machine, they will continuously download a steady stream of additional viruses onto your machine, exponentially infecting it. As such, if you are unfamiliar with them, avoid peer-to-peer file sharing services.

Computers have been growing in popularity at a rapid rate over the past few decades. More people are taking the plunge and purchasing computers due to their immense versatility and importance in this fast paced modern society in which we all live. Additionally, businesses rely on computers for a wide array of their operation that decades ago, would have been dependent on a human. As a result of this, it is vital to ensure the computer is properly cared for so it will exhibit the longevity that it can as well avoid any catastrophic occurrences such as mass loss of data.

In caring for your computer, there are a couple fairly simplistic guidelines you can follow to ensure the hardware is not neglected and left to the harmful elements that can damage the components in your computer case. The first guideline to abide by is to consider changing the actual placement of the computer itself. Many people tend to place their computer towers on the floor. This may seem like something that is logical and would not put the computer at risk, however, it can be an issue if left unchanged over a long period of time. The main issue that persists is a build up of dust in and around the case. Additionally, depending on the placement of the case on the floor, specific vents could be obstructed by the carpeting. When looking for proper placement for your computer tower, place it on a solid surface that is elevated off the ground at least three to four inches.

A second and equally simple guideline to abide by to ensure your components remain in good shape is to regularly inspect the inside of your case and clean it of all debris, the most common being dust. Take a can of compressed air to the components of your computer at least once a month. Unfortunately, dust, as common as it is, is one of the most detrimental elements to computer components and can cause a slew of issues if left unchecked.

File sharing can be nerve-wracking. Is it a legal site? Could the file contain a virus? Is it worth the potential risks? There are certainly plenty of websites on the Internet that are not legal, will disseminate virus-ridden files and are not worth the risks, but there are also plenty of completely safe and legal sites. File sharing is an important service for many users. Grandmas need to see photos of their grandchildren; businessmen and women need to transfer documents to clients; and everyone wants the ability to send music to their friends. The following list is a rundown of various file-sharing sites that won’t burn you.

MediaFire: This website does not limit your uploads or downloads, has a simple interface, and is compatible with many social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The only limit MediaFire enforces is a file upload size of 200 MB.

Google Docs: Google Docs is mostly for documents and spreadsheets and is popular in the business world. Forms can be uploaded, downloaded and edited easily with the clean Google interface. The maximum file size is 1024 MB, as is the maximum storage space.

RapidShare: The best advantage of RapidShare is the ability to upload and download multiple files simultaneously. For the user with a large library that wants to upload everything they have, RapidShare is a great service. The maximum file size is 500 MB.

FileFactory: Less known than some of the others, FileFactory provides huge file sizes (2000 MB) and an even huger maximum storage space (500 GB). It’s fast and reliable, and FileFactory even pays the user for every 1000 downloads.

Megaupload: Easily one of the most sought-after file-sharing services, Megaupload gives the user a maximum file size of 2048 MB and 200 GB of storage space.

Safe and easy file sharing depends on knowing the right websites to wield. If you choose any of the above, you’re on the right track.

When you leave your front door unlocked, one of two things could happen: nothing and something. Perhaps no one will come through your door, but you’re completely unprotected if someone does decide to try the knob. That’s what it’s like to have a computer connected to the Internet without applying a firewall. Depending on your neighborhood, you might never have a home intruder. Although the Internet is a bit like a vast and scary neighborhood, there are pockets that are safer than others. For this reason, not everyone needs a firewall, but it’s still advantageous to have one.

The following list contains three examples of network setups and the security risk of each.

Dial-up home computer: This is the most secure computer setup. It is also, however, the slowest. Hackers usually look past dial-up networks due to the nature of the connection. It’s more difficult and less beneficial for an intruder to hack a computer using dial-up Internet. Thus, if your home computer is set up as such, the use of a firewall is not necessary. The likelihood of an attack is minimal.

High-speed connection: Computers connected in this manner are at a high risk for hacking because they are almost always connected to the Internet. A firewall would be very helpful in this situation.

Small business computer: Regardless of the connection used by the small business, it is in the interest of that business to invest in a powerful firewall due to the vulnerability of such a network and the possibility of important and private documents to be compromised.

The idea of “needing” a firewall is actually misleading. Anyone can surf the Internet without one; firewalls are just a means of protecting your system from looming threats. Most experts would agree that employing a firewall is in every user’s best interest if they are worried about their privacy, but it’s not a requirement. But neither is locking your door.

If the everyday computer user employs a firewall, it’s more than likely to be a software firewall. It’s a firewall that can be downloaded from the Internet and easily installed and customized to fit the user’s needs. It’s either free or inexpensive, and it works relatively well. However, the everyday computer user probably doesn’t have thousands — or even millions — of dollars worth of business data and records at stake. Businesses and other large networks of computers require a more secure method for protecting their systems. They’re not cheap, and they’re not easy, but hardware firewalls provide that extra level of safety.

Juniper Networks NetScreen is not the best hardware firewall, but it’s not the worst either, so it’s a prime example for detailing the specifics of this type of information defense. Juniper’s specifications and features are described below.

The price for Juniper Networks NetScreen is approximately $13,000. More advanced hardware firewalls can cost as much as $60,000.

The two versions of NetScreen hardware available are the NetScreen-5200 and the NetScreen-5400.

The NetScreen-5200 has two slots, 10 Gbps FW, and the possibility for up to 4094 virtual local area networks. There are 16 default security zones, but there is room for more than 1,000 total.

The NetScreen-5400 has four slots, 30 Gbps FW, and the possibility for up to 4094 virtual LANs as well. The 5400 allows for 2,000,000 sessions compared to the 5200’s 1,000,000.

All Juniper firewalls have anti-virus systems that use the well-known Kaspersky Lab technology.

Juniper Networks NetScreen products are not the most confusing on the market, but they often still require a computer technician or specialist to set them up. Juniper is a reliable company used by many of the top businesses and universities in the United States. Utilized properly, Juniper’s NetScreen products can secure a fairly large network of computer systems from the many dangers lurking online.

Paying for goods and services is the bedrock of capitalism. The free music downloading craze of the late-1990s and early 2000s created a belief in many that music and art should be available for everyone without charge, but that idea faded when the system was proved illegal. While there are still sites today that promote the exchange of free music, they are forced to do so legally and with the consent of the participating artists. Legal music downloading sites have become the new norm. The following list details four for-pay music downloading sites.

Napster: The biggest culprit of illegal file sharing and the one that fell the hardest back in the day was Napster. Today, however, Napster operates using a subscription method. For a fee of $5 per month, users are given access to a more than 8 million song library. They are only given five actual downloads per month, though. Napster supports both MP3 and WMA formats.

iTunes: This service is the largest and best-known due to its commercial appeal, but the price per download makes iTunes a lesser choice for those looking to get the most bang for their buck. No subscription is required; users visit the iTunes library and purchase songs individually or albums entirely. The downloading format is a specific iTunes music file playable only through the iTunes application.

eMusic: The service provided by eMusic is exceptional, but the library lacks many top-40 songs and artists. The library does consist of more than 4.5 million songs, though, so there’s bound to be something for everyone. Users can participate in a free trial with 25 free MP3s.

Amazon MP3: The Amazon MP3 service, which is accessed through the traditional Amazon.com website, provides individual songs for often less than $1 and entire albums for a little as $5 depending on current sales. Amazon’s library contains about 6 million songs total and is available only in the MP3 format.

Since the legal troubles and subsequent collapse of free music file-sharing websites, it’s been hard for music lovers on the Internet to find a comparable substitute to fill their Napster-sized holes. The dearth of outlets for such endeavors has been frustrating for those who believe that music should be free for all to enjoy. Luckily, there are a number of sites today that provide totally free and legal music. While you may not be able to obtain the new Britney Spears single, you may stumble upon a genre or artist you never knew existed. Here is a look at three sites for doing just that.

Internet Archive’s Audio Archive: With more than 200,000 free audio downloads, the Audio Archive is no slouch in this business. You can find audio books, Grateful Dead concerts, news programs from the days of old, and tons more. The music collection alone features 50,000 songs — all for no cost. The goal of this particular project is to collect various bits of audio content for researchers, but the public gets to reap the benefits too.

Jamendo: You can find thousands of tracks from genres such as rock, jazz, pop and classical with Jamendo. In fact, there are more than 250,000 available tracks on the website. The Creative Commons and Free Art licenses are what allow a site like this to operate. Jamendo also promotes artists and raises money to support those that provide site content.

Free Music Archive: While it only has 22,000 songs in its library, the Free Music Archive is a great idea and an innovative way to encourage artists to create and share. Still a relatively new website, the Free Music Archive has plenty of room to grow and continue impacting the music world.

There are still ways to download music illegally, but why bother when there are so many paths for finding extraordinary and extraordinarily free music.

The trend in monitors today is liquid crystal display, or LCD, screens. The bulkiness and low resolution of old CRT monitors have made them effectively obsolete. Therefore, the odds are that, if you’re in the market for a new monitor, you’re in the market for an LCD monitor. Not so fast. There is more than one type of LCD screen. There are three main panel technologies to consider within the category of LCD. They are explained in bullet form below.

Twisted nematic (TN): TN panels are the most common and least expensive of the three technologies. The gray-to-gray transition of TN panels is 2 to 4 milliseconds. This response time is excellent, which is one reason why the standard has become so popular. The color of TN panels is usually quite poor, with only 6 bits an RGB, which makes for a little more than 16 million colors. Another con of the technology is the inability to view the screen clearly unless standing right in front of it. TN panel LCD monitors will run the consumer around $250 or less.

Super patterned vertical alignment (S-PVA): The second best technology in the bunch is S-PVA panel LCDs. The improvements from TN panels include the following: better viewing from side angles, brighter, better and more colors, and a very low black level display. The TN panel has a quicker response time, however. This type of technology will cost the consumer around $700 or less.

In-plane switching (IPS): The best and most expensive technology is IPS. Unfortunately, this technology is also the slowest. Side-angle viewing is improved from even the S-PVA technology, and the color reproduction is phenomenal. The technology has updated since it was created in 1996, improving the speed and contrast ratio, and the price has also dropped significantly over the years. Depending on the screen size, an IPS screen could cost as little as $400.

Downloading anything from the Internet is one of the most dangerous things you can do to your computer. If you aren’t protected from viruses or spyware, a corrupted download can crash an entire system. Scary viruses aside, there are other potential harms and issues associated with downloading. To steer clear of those and other problems when downloading software, abide by these tips:

Stay away from file-sharing sites and programs when deciding what downloading avenue to use. Many file sharing websites operate illegally, which makes using them both against the law and increases the downloader’s risk of obtaining a virus. The low amount of regulation on these types of sites is what makes them brimming with hazards.

Save your system before you download. You can do this by using Windows restoration or by copying the contents of your hard drive onto another device. You never know how your system will react to new software. It’s best to be safe.

If you’re sent a software program through an attachment in your email, don’t open it. It’s uncommon for software to be sent in this manner, and opening unknown attachments is a sure way to invite hackers and viruses into your computer. Because downloads often start automatically, don’t open any email from a strange or unfamiliar source.

Read all the software requirements and instructions prior to downloading. It’s possible your computer may not be fast enough, possess enough hard drive space or memory, or run a compatible operating system required by the program. If it appears the software download you’ve located is incompatible with your particular system, continue searching.

Thoroughly examine the site you’ve chosen from which to download. It’s smart to download only from websites you recognize or that have a reliable reputation. If you’re unsure of the site’s validity, research more well-known sites and use those instead. Procuring the software you desire is not as important as safeguarding your system from outside attacks.

If you have been in the market for a new computer, now is the best time ever for picking up that gorgeous, fast new laptop you have secretly been drooling over. Stop drooling, and start getting ready to finally take the plunge into the computer of your dreams. With laptops like the Sony Vaio and the Macbook Air out these days, you pretty much can’t go wrong with whatever you decide to buy. And you might even be able to get your laptop to pay for itself, if you try out some online casino games. Modern laptops are perfect for gaming, after all. So you might as well get the best you can, and use it to the furthest extent of its power. Just make sure you stay safe online.

First off, you want to find yourself a laptop that has plenty of hard disk space. Since most have more than you will likely use in a lifetime (unless you are a film maker), your next goal should be a fast processor. Nothing spoils your game like lag. Thirdly, you want plenty of memory. Finally, you want to have a dedicated, swift internet connection, so that you don’t have to wait long for your games to load. And then there is the software you will need. It goes beyond just getting the casino’s software, you know.

First off, you are going to want a firewall program. Comodo and ZoneAlarm make some great ones, and they are both free. After that, you are going to want a system scanning utility, such as Avast!, which is also free. Once you have these things, you can surf the net with relative safety. However, if you want to avoid getting inundated with pop-up ads, you might try Firefox, which is quick, free, and just happens to block pop-up ads. Once yourhardware is tight and yoursuite is in order, you can play your games in safety and comfort.

If you are interested in increasing your Web traffic, creating a Web radio show or a podcast show is one of the quickest ways to build an audience. Like offline radio shows, word of mouth is often what makes a radio show popular. To get the word out in the beginning, sites can buy ads on sites with similar topics in order to grab the right demographic. Your radio or podcast personality, often an interviewer or expert in a topic, can also do guest spots on other Internet radio shows or podcasts to drum up interest in your own show.

To get your radio or podcast content online, you need to choose and implement a package from an audio stream transmitter. The one often used by online radio stations and podcasters is Live365. The company has a number of packages for different needs. Everyone from the occasional podcaster to a professional radio station can choose the appropriate package and get started in Internet audio.

DrJays.com uses a Web radio show hosted by Boss Lady to bring music fans onto the site to hear live interviews with their favorite singers and groups. The DrJays appeals to music fans, making the use of Internet radio and music interviews – one of the most effective ways to bring in the exact user demographic that the site is interested in. Lady Boss has made DrJays a better-known brand that has expanded through the word of mouth of listeners. The same principle used by DrJays can be used on your own website with original Internet radio content. Just think of a topic that will most interest your most likely demographic and create audio content that will grab the attention of that audience. Build excitement about each broadcast by talking about it on topical forums and run ads for it on your website.

Being in the market for a firewall can be confusing and overwhelming. There are so many options that it seems impossible to know which firewall is the best overall. And deciphering which firewall is the best suited for you is practically unthinkable. Therefore, a list of the best available firewalls — from least to most expensive — along with their basic features, is supplied below.

1. ZoneAlarm Pro – $29.95: Complete with identity conservation and software to impede spyware, ZoneAlarm Pro has some of the finest features at the lowest price. The software works on as many as three computers and upgrades automatically for free. ZoneAlarm utilizes a multi-layered approach to firewall protection with customizable advanced elements.

2. NeT Firewall – $49.95: The simplicity of NeT Firewall’s interface is one of its main attractions. Many settings are pre-installed at a reasonable default level, allowing for instant protection upon downloading. The firewall takes advantage of the modern technology of stateful inspection at three separate levels on the network.

3. F-Secure Internet Security – $59.99: F-Secure is more advanced than the previous two firewalls and has the power to prove it. Unlike most firewalls, F-Secure protects against viruses, worms and other forms of intrusion. The package also features a fierce spam filter and rootkit remover. As you visit websites, F-Secure scans and identifies harmful content automatically.

4. Panda Firewall – $91.95: While it’s certainly the most costly option, Panda comes with more features than you could ever imagine. There’s a network management system, a searchable intruder registry, a filter creation wizard, and even a Trojan virus protection setup. The free user guide helps you navigate the many ways to address system attacks.

There’s no guarantee that one of these four firewalls will be perfectly tailored to your needs, but they’ve been tested and reviewed as some of the most rugged and reliable firewalls on the market. The price becomes irrelevant when you have safety on your side.

Forty dollars a year isn’t an exorbitant amount of money, but if you’re going to be shelling out any amount of coin for a computer protection program, you want it to be top-notch. If Online Armor Personal Firewall isn’t top-notch enough, no firewall is. Before delving into the pros and cons of the software, the specifications for the product include the following:

The firewall requires a computer running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7; it requires 20 megabytes of hard drive space and at least 512 megabytes of RAM.

The software updates automatically and does not protect from viruses.

Online Armor does provide spyware and identity theft protection.

Additional features within the bundle include a mail filter, key-logger identification and host checking.

The protection provided by Online Armor is one of the best money can buy, but the level of protection alone does not suffice in making software viable for every user. If the highest protection were what every user sought, every user would employ firewall hardware instead. Firewall hardware, however, is difficult to manage without computer technology expertise and can cost more than most individuals would be willing to pay. The main advantage of Online Armor, then, is its ease of use and lack of burden on the user’s system.

The setup involved with Online Armor Personal Firewall is step-by-step and logical. The user is delivered heavy protection with the setup difficulty of a simple application. Online Armor operates using only 20 MB on hard drive space, ensuring the system won’t slow down after downloading. There aren’t any hidden add-ons or fees involved, either.

The downside to Online Armor is that is only compatible with 64-bit versions of the Windows operating system. The $40 price tag may also be a downside for some users, but the level of security bestowed is well worth it to those looking for reliable software protection. A free version of the software is available, but there are fewer features.

In the world of Internet downloads, free software often means cheap software. This is true for firewalls, virus protection and data storage options. But that doesn’t mean dependable free software doesn’t exist. With a bit of research and exploration, you can find products with just as many features and abilities as those costing upward to $50 a month. Listed and detailed below are three of the best free firewall software options for the Windows computer user looking to safeguard their system without breaking the bank.

Comodo Internet Security: This software is one of the most advanced free products you can use to secure your network. While Comodo is generally for users with expertise in computers, there are both basic and advanced customizable features, which can alleviate the process of utilizing the application. The firewall is password protected so users sharing the same computer cannot turn it off. The Comodo Internet Security download also comes with free antivirus software that you can choose to accept or not.

PC Tools Firewall Plus: Not only does PC Tools Firewall Plus allow the user to monitor the entering and exiting traffic from their network, the user can also create their own additional rules and filters for allowing or disallowing information. Because of this expert option, PC Tools is not for the everyday computer user, but it’s worth learning to understand how to utilize.

Ashampo Firewall: Of the three, Ashampo is the easiest application to work, but it does come with an advanced mode for users with more knowledge of system protocols. Ashampo has a neat feature called “Block All” that will halt all activity during an invasion emergency. The firewall also comes with a spam blocker, a browser history cleaner and a program manager.

The amount of protection available for absolutely free is astounding. These are just three of the hundreds of options procurable to any user. Have fun blocking out hackers!

In 1982, the computer was named the annual “Man of the Year” by Time magazine. It had been growing in usage and advancing in technology for years before then. Three years later, in 1985, engineers at Cisco designed the first version of what became known as a firewall. The first published paper on this new technology came out in 1988. All this is meant to say that firewalls are a relatively new creation in the history of computers and computer technology. But it was a necessary creation, marking a pivotal moment in computer history with a legacy that continues today.

The first generation of firewalls, as explained in the 1988 paper by engineers at the Digital Equipment Corporation, was called packet filters. Simultaneously, at a different company called AT&T Bell Laboratories, two men were already working on what would be the second generation of firewalls. The third generation came only two years after the initial paper describing the first generation. In 1992, the fourth generation was developed, followed by the fifth generation in 1996. Current firewalls are part of a generation without a number designation; instead, the modern firewall is a fusion of all generations and is known as the “Next Generation.” The following list will briefly explain key aspects of each generation.

Generation 1: Packet filtering is the most basic task of a firewall. The filter merely examines the packet of information and allows it through or doesn’t.

Generation 2: Circuit level firewalls were developed to prevent attacks resulting from service denial.

Generation 3: Application firewalls are a type of proxy firewall that block suspicious traffic.

Generation 4: Visas, developed at USC, became the foundation for the first commercially viable firewall.

Generation 5: The Cisco Centri firewall became a successful commercial firewall.

Next Generation: The last and most current generation allows for complete management of the firewall and protects systems from invasions.

Understanding how something works is one of the best ways to determine its merits and if it’s right for your individual needs. In the case of firewalls, knowing how that system works is important to the protection of your private information. If you know how firewalls work, it’s easier to choose the kind of firewall you need. Comprehending the basic structure of information flow in and out of your computer can save you from the horrors of identity theft and data corruption that a network without a firewall enables.

A firewall is basically a filter that sits between your private computer network and the public network of the Internet. Depending on the type of firewall — hardware or software — the structure can either be an actual physical router (hardware) or simply a downloaded application on your computer (software). Either way, both types behave as filters. Without them, hackers can access all your data and spread virus-like corrupted content.

As traffic enters your network from the Internet, the firewall can check it for validity in three possible ways.

1. Stateful inspection: Instead of scanning each packet of information trying to gain access, the firewall compares the questionable information to valid information database. Saving packets the computer user has trusted already creates this database.

2. Packet filtering: This is the basic manner of filtering incoming content. Data is scrutinized and moves along if it meets certain criteria as set by the filter.

3. Proxy service: The proxy service creates a parallel version of both real hosts to emulate the how the system will react to information entering the network.

To fully grasp the extent of a firewall’s occupation, it’s helpful to more deftly understand how computer servers work. However, knowing that a firewall sits between the Internet and your computer, going through the information attempting to infiltrate, is material enough for the everyday user.

The decision to install a firewall is a crucial judgment call for computer users. The benefits of having such protection are not definitive — it makes more sense for some users to have them than others depending on the individual’s computer practices — but it’s hard to argue that not having a firewall is safer than having one. Purely deciding to use a firewall is not the end of the story, however. What type of firewall is the best for the user? There are two main categories of firewall: hardware and software. In the succeeding bullets, the details of both kinds of firewall will be explicated, allowing the user to resolve for his or herself which to employ.

Software firewalls: The average computer user may find that firewall software is the most logical route for their type of usage. Firewall software is usually extremely cheap — often free — and can easily be found online at reputable websites. The software will download from the website and escort the user through a number of straightforward steps. Despite their simplicity, software firewalls are often customizable and dependable. The downsides to software firewalls include the need for regular updating and the possible burden extra applications can be on a system.

Hardware firewalls: Usually businesses and large networks utilize hardware firewalls, but the everyday user may also take advantage of them if desired. Firewall hardware allows for central management of incoming and outgoing data, and there is very little burden on the computer’s resources since the program is not saved in RAM. Hardware firewalls and secure and fast, but they do come with a hefty price tag. They also require the knowledge of a computer specialist, but if it’s in the user’s budget and security is a top priority, hardware firewalls are the way to go.

Whichever firewall is chosen, the user should be able to rest assured that they have taken the necessary precautions to safeguard what’s theirs.

The extent of the relationship between computer users and the firewalls in place on their systems is usually fairly minimal. Once in a while, when browsing the Internet, a particular website may contain content a firewall is assigned to block, and the user will receive a small display bar telling them something within the site has been suppressed. The user largely overlooks the work done by firewalls, but the advantages of using them are manifold. In other words, if the user didn’t have a firewall, they would notice the absence in the form of unwanted intrusions. But with them, the user is safe from danger.

Although there is much a firewall cannot protect computers from, there is plenty that firewalls are capable of doing. The following list will detail some of the major benefits of using a firewall.

Gives the user control of what is coming into the system. Firewalls serve as a checkpoint for information both coming into and leaving your computer network. Although it depends on the class of firewall in place, most will announce the entering traffic and allow the user to accept or deny.

Identifies and blocks infiltrators. While it’s certainly significant for firewalls to hinder the entry of possibly dangerous intrusions, it’s also of great import for firewalls to be able to classify the specific intruder and save that information for potential future attacks.

Protects private information. The biggest reason to install firewalls is to ensure the data stored on the user’s computer and the actions performed by the user on their own system are sheltered from external threats. Information protection is the reason firewalls give the user control the comings and goings and block likely hazards.

There is more than one type of firewall, and it’s important to know the appropriate sort for each computer users’ purposes, but having any manner of protecting one’s system from outside invasion is advantageous.

When considering your computer’s ability to handle a dual-screen setup, it’s important to be aware of various differences in computer technologies. In most cases, if you’d like multiple monitors working with a single system, you will need to add a video card. But the kind of video card needed depends on whether your computer employs an Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) or a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI). Both technologies are ports for connecting expansion hardware — hardware you need if you want dual monitors. The differences between the AGP and PCI are explicated in the following paragraphs.

AGP: Although it was created after PCI, the Accelerated Graphics Port is the lesser-used port today. AGP was created specifically for the use of graphics cards that would support 3-D images, which is where most of the differences between the two technologies lie. Because it was created as a channel for graphics only, it is faster than a PCI. Despite its speed and abilities, AGP slots don’t tend to come standard on motherboards. For that reason, fewer AGP graphics cards are produced. The PCI is basically universal and encompasses more than just graphics cards.

PCI: The Peripheral Component Interconnect bus is much more common than the AGP. And while it may not be the fastest if you want to do heavy 3-D gaming, it is able to do more than an AGP bus. PCI shares its bus so that it is able to transmit information from and to more than just the graphics card. Most recently, since AGP has been phased out and the original PCI is unable to handle intense graphics, the PCI Express bus is becoming available. It is faster than both AGP and PCI, and it is also backward compatible with PCI graphics cards.

Knowing which technology your computer supports is the only way you’ll be able to successfully expand your screen horizon.

Sometimes you just need more screen space. But if you’re looking to set up two or more monitors for one computer, you might run into a hardware issue. In order to plug two monitor cords into your main PC, you need two slots. Most computers come standard with one video card; however, it is nearly painless to rearrange your system for dual screen purposes, and there are numerous ways in which you can accomplish such a setup. Knowing your options and the necessary hardware for each is a crucial element to setting up a dual-screen system. Listed below are three hardware options available.

1. Dual-head graphics adapter: The adapter is handy because it allows for a combination of digital and analog connections while only taking up one PCI slot. For those with little space in their case or two few slots on their motherboard, this is the best option. Because it is essentially one graphics card that splits off into two plugs, you are able to maximize your space while meeting your system requirements.

2. Second graphics card: If you have the room, adding a second graphics card can be just as convenient as the dual-head adapter. With an additional graphics card, though, you get an amplification of graphics ability. If your motherboard does not have a slot for more than one graphics card, this option is impractical.

3. External video card: For the computer user wary about opening up their computer, there are external video cards you can hook up through your USB port. While it may be a disturbance to constantly have an external device in sight, the option is available. There are also external devices you can plug into your video card slot on the back of your computer.

The best option will vary for each user and will depend on the capabilities of your specific system.

Are you one of the growing number of people who lugged out their old monitor and hooked it up to work with their current one simultaneously? Dual monitor setup is becoming more and more popular in this modern era of multitasking. Why have just one monitor when you can have two? Increasing the total space on which you have to work while having a cool-looking arrangement in your office is hard to pass up if you have the supplies. But, believe it or not, applying two monitors to one system is more useful than just a design piece. There are countless ways to utilize a dual screen setup. The following examples showcase a fraction of the techniques you can employ to get the most out of your system.

1. Watching a movie in wide screen. Don’t have a big-screen television but want to watch a flick with some friends? Having two or more screens on your computer can be just as rewarding.

2. Watching a movie or TV while checking your email. If you want to watch a movie or video but don’t necessarily want to totally miss out on what’s going on elsewhere on the Internet, have the movie or video playing on one screen and have a window with your email or Twitter account on the other.

3. Editing photos. You can look at the comprehensive collection of photos in thumbnail view on one screen and work on individual ones in editing mode on the other.

4. Comparing products or text. Instead of decreasing the window size to look at two items at once, drag one window to the other screen.

5. Operating two browsers or search engines. You can run Firefox on one side and Internet Explorer on the other to compare speed and receive the benefits of each.

There are umpteen more uses for dual screens. It’s likely you’ll figure them out if you’ve got enough tasks on your plate.

Having two monitors to watch movies, play video games, and spread out your work can be a way to increase productivity and boost your overall computer experience. So what if you have two monitors? You still have to set it up! Luckily, setting up a dual monitor system is relatively easy if you have the supplies needed. These supplies include the following items:

Two monitors

Two cables for those monitors

Dual monitor video card capability

Of those components, the only one that may be slightly complicated is the video card. But once you know what you’re looking for, you’ll be able to tell if your computer supports the setup. Most computers do not come with a two-input video card and will require you to buy one. Just check the back of your computer to see if there are two spots or one for inputting cables. If you do have to buy a video card, be sure you obtain one with the correct configurations for your specific computer and bus.

To install a new video card, first power down your computer. Installing hardware can be as simple as fitting it securely into its location. So once you pinpoint the video card, remove the old and lodge the new one in its place. As long as the card locks into the mainframe, it should be installed correctly. Plug each monitor cable into the input and back of the monitor and power up the machine.

If your computer was already dual-monitor capable, you should be good to go. If not, you’ll need to go through the process of setting up your new video card, which is just a matter of installing driver software. Once that is complete, restart the computer and change your properties and screen resolution to the condition you prefer. If your video card and monitor cables are connected properly, you should be able to change the preferences effortlessly. Enjoy your new setup!

One of the many reasons people find desktop computers attractive is the ability to have a large screen on which to work, play and interact. Using a regular-sized monitor is suitable, but, for some, bigger is better. You don’t necessarily need to buy a singular mammoth monitor, either. There is another way to increase your screen size. The answer to a larger workspace is a dual monitor setup, allowing you to view your actions on two screens. There are various motives for setting up your computer this way. The following bullets will explain three options for doubling up on monitors.

Replication: Suppose you’re trying to show your mother how to check her email, but you don’t want her breathing down your neck as you go through the motions. Setting up dual monitors with the second one replicating the exact actions of the first could help solve this problem. You could set the screens side-by-side or back-to-back and easily display original maneuvers.

Continuous screen: If you’re looking for a large screen, setting up two monitors to stretch information from one to the other may be the best option. Everything that was once on one monitor simply extends to the other — keeping the same resolution between both screens. For this setup, it is most practical to have similar or the same monitors. Different monitors may necessitate lower or higher screen resolutions, which could affect the picture quality.

Double view: The problem with the continuous screen option is addressed with the option of double view. Using this setup, varying resolutions needs are no longer problematic because each screen can be customized. The screens still work much like the continuous screen, but there may be bumps and lags when attempting to drag folders from one screen to the other and viewing video encompassing both.

If you have an extra monitor lying around the house, why not give the setup a try?

If you want to know your firewall better, you should focus on the Options menu. Once you enter the Options, you will be greeted with a number of terms and phraseology that you don’t understand. Take it slow. Do not be in a hurry.

If you can log onto the internet and check out a demo version of the software under consideration, you will find it easier to overcome your doubts. If you can get screen shots of the Options menu or panel with each and every term explained, you will find it easier to proceed. Do not hesitate to make written notes.

You should take a very serious approach. The last thing you want this to disable your firewall just because you are not in a position to permit one or stop a software application from accessing the web.

The combination of a functional approach, clear understanding of minor options and terms and use of web’s fantastic research facilities should simplify the task. If you do not have the time or do not have the inclination to take such a detailed approach, you can always log on to the web and ask specific questions from persons and experts available online.

You can simply type the question related to the firewall in the search engine and you should be flooded with answers. Do not be in a hurry to rely upon the final answer. The last thing you want is to open your computer to hackers simply because you misunderstood a specific instruction.

Make it a point to visit at least three of four top web pages so that you have a clear understanding of the answer. If you are still not satisfied, get in touch with any friend or relative who knows more about firewalls. Never make the mistake of letting it go. This approach usually backfires.

What should you do if you want to choose the most popular free firewall available in the market? For starters, never make the mistake of relying on the first piece of advice you get. Remember, free software applications happen to be the most commonly used to lure or con people putting your computer’s safety at risk.

There are numerous software applications that are portrayed as free programs but contain viruses and malicious elements. Once installed in your computer, you will lose all control over your privacy and your private data. Would it not be fantastic if the malicious elements online succeeded in conning you by giving free flawed firewall? So be careful and only download from trusted sources like open office and other secure, safe free software sources.

That program which is in charge of protecting your computer will become your biggest enemy. The worst part is that you can never stop the firewall from having access to the web. It is the firewall’s job to block all other programs. You may discover that there is a steady stream of outflow of data from your computer simply because the firewall has automatically established connections with a certain remote computer and is feeding data to the same.

While this may sound like an exaggerated version, you never know how you may be conned by being promised free software. Hence, take things slow and steady when you are choosing the free firewall. There are specific names in the market like Comodo, Kerio and Zone Alarm. As far as possible, try relying on the well established names.

Do not just contact any individual and download any program that is described as a firewall. Be prepared to compromise on functionality as long as you enjoy good reputation software. Focusing too much on the ease of use and convenience may leave you with a big hole in your computer. It is better to play it safe when you are downloading free firewall from the internet.

Do you know that you can install and run more than one monitor on the same central processing unit? You can have two monitors placed side by side and can view different files on the same hard disk simultaneously.

Many persons find it difficult to understand the basic concept related to dual monitor setup. People wonder why anybody would want to look at the same content on two screens. Well, let us imagine you have a big file that does not fit in your computer monitor at original magnification.

You either have to reduce the magnification or have to make use of scroll bars to view the file in batches. By having two monitors fitted to your computer, you can view the file over the two monitors spread over.

This is no different than having a larger screen in front of you. The only difference is that the images spread over two computer screens instead of one. Although this may make you feel uncomfortable at first, you will realize that this is a very convenient option that helps you simplify the task of working on your computer.

Surprisingly, installing and setting up dual monitors on a single system is not a complicated process at all. You just need a video card that supports this option and you can start enjoying dual monitors set of immediately.

This means that by simply changing the video card or using it properly, you can transform the way you work on computers. Hence, do not conclude that the dual monitors it is something that will not be useful for you or cannot be installed on your computer. Rather, check out more information about dual monitors so that you can find the best possible deal.

If you know the importance of the firewall but are scared of installing the same because you do not want to get locked out of your net connection, then why don’t you try to learn how to configure your firewall? Many persons make the mistake of thinking that they have to be an expert in computer and computer related matters just to configure the firewall properly.

It is important to have a very functional approach. Whether you know anything about computers and software or not is irrelevant. What matters is whether you can configure and use the firewall properly or not. Whether you remain a dunderhead as far as computer software programs are concerned or not is irrelevant.

Hence, instead of trying to improve yourself from scratch, why don’t you just focus on how to operate the firewall properly? Once you adopt this approach, you will realize that you just have to explore the firewall and understand all its features and functions. If you have a general idea about the functions of a firewall, then you should not have any problem when assessing which feature is used for which purpose.

Thankfully, the firewall, like all other software applications, is built and configured in a logical manner. The initial screen in front of you will always be a summary. The fact that you do not understand it yet is irrelevant. What matters is that you know what it stands for. Once you understand this, you can start focusing on all those areas you do not know and try to educate yourself.

Each and every firewall will have in built options which can be configured to a certain level. The options are often divided into simple and advanced levels. Do not focus on the advanced levels yet. Completing these tasks will give you confidence of knowing something about your firewall.

What are the advantages of setting up a dual monitor system in your home or office? Once you get used to the twin set-up, you will find it very difficult to work on a single screen again. Many persons feel that the gap between the two screens will make things difficult.

Well, you have the option of setting up the two screens at an angular position so that you can check out multiple files without twisting your neck again and again. Or, you can make smart use of the space and place the monitors adjacent to each other so that you end up having a clear view of him both monitors at this same point of time.

If you feel that only one monitor will be used and the other will go waste, then why don’t you take a keener look at your usage pattern of the current monitor? You will discover that you place your attention at a specific point of the monitor at any given instance.

You never take a look at the entire monitor as a whole. When you want to access the taskbar on your computer, you either look at the top or the bottom of the screen. Does this mean that you should only have a monitor with the top and the bottom and no middle part? Hence, do not worry about the utilization of the dual monitors. It will be a very convenient set-up and you should not have any problem in utilizing it fully.

If you are involved in the business of making architectural drawings or other graphics on your computer, the presence of twin monitors can make a huge difference. For starters, you will have the entire layout in front of you at full magnification. Secondly, you will find it easier to work because moving the mouse from one end to the other will simply involve shifting your eyes from one monitor to the other.

Should you worry if you have installed the Linux operating system on your computer and you are planning to make use of the twin monitor set-up? Setting up dual monitors is not a complicated process. Hence, you should not face any difficulty in using two monitors on the same system even if you are not using the Windows operating system.

The first and the most important thing that you should consider is native support. Do you have to make any changes to the operating system or the set-up just to utilize dual monitors? The technology aspect comes later. The first is whether your motherboard and your operating system support the same. The central processing unit should support twin monitors long as you have the right video card installed in the same.

As far as the operating system is concerned, using any recent version of the Windows operating system or using any popular distribution of the Linux operating system should suffice. In most cases, you should not have any difficulty in setting up the dual monitors.

Hence, there is no need to rethink your idea of having dual monitors fitted into your system just because you are not using the windows operating system. Even if you do not enjoy support using a specific Linux distribution, you can always log onto the net and check out various options.

You can easily find the necessary modifications you have to make to your operating system to make it compatible with dual monitors. You can also opt for a dual boot option where you can log onto a more popular Linux operating system installed with the help of a flash drive or a CD.

Hence, do not even think of skipping the decision to opt for two monitors just because you have a relatively unknown version of the operating system installed in your computer. Try to find are practical and workable solution to the issue instead.

Do you want to avoid the embarrassment of being unable to set up the dual monitors despite having the right video card, the right monitors and the right operating system? Well, if you have all the necessary equipment, why should it be difficult to use more than one monitor at the same time?

Well, have you ever bothered to consider the space factor? That is right. You will need real estate on your computer desk. Whether you like it or not, most computer desks are not manufactured to accommodate more than one monitor at the same time. Let us face it, the idea of using multiple monitors seems very odd an unworkable to most individuals.

Even those who do use it invariably do so because they have special requirements. Hence, you should check out whether you can set up more than one monitor on the same computer desk. What about having two different desks? Well, you need space in and around your computer for setting up another monitor.

Secondly, you should check the angle and the positioning properly. Unlike the central processing unit or keyboard which is positioned and used from a single place, the monitor is used in a dynamic environment. Your angle of sight will have a huge impact on the quality of performance.

Hence, you cannot place the monitors a few feet apart. If you do, you will end up straining your neck all the time. If you do not have sufficient space, you must be prepared to purchase a brand new computer desk or set-up the table in such a manner that it can accommodate more than one monitor at once. Make sure you incorporate these expenses as a part of your budget. Otherwise, you may end up spending a lot more than what you had originally planned.

Do you have a friend or relative who loves playing games? If yes, then why don’t you give him or her a great gift. Why don’t you opt for a dual monitor set-up? When your friend starts playing a game, he or she will have access to more screen space and can play the game much better. Why?

Having two monitors in front of you is the same like having four eyes instead of just two. You will find that the images in the games are visible more clearly because there is more space. Secondly, there will be better chances of playing well because you will no longer have to squint or focus on small objects.

Most importantly, the fact that the individual has two monitors just to play games will put him or her in the league with top gamers. Handling more than one monitor at once is considered sign of a person who is very serious about gaming.

These options are normally used for those individuals who make use of architectural drawings and others such design options on computers. While going in for two monitors just for gaming may seem like an expensive affair, it can make a huge difference to your income as well.

If you are professional game reviewer or game developer, having two monitors can help you improve visibility and image quality without stretching your monitor to the limits. If you are going in for slightly advanced versions, there is the business investment will hold you in very good stead and will help you get great returns.

Hence, there is no harm in encouraging your friend to take the skills in gaming a bit more seriously. From working as a reviewer for gaming companies to writing professional blogs on games-there are many options that your friend can enjoy after your gift the dual monitor setup.

Do you feel that having a dual monitor set-up on your computer is nothing more than a fancy way of spending your money? Do you think that individuals can and ought to make do with one monitor and that the second monitor is not a requirement at all? Well, you must understand that it is not just about functionality alone. It is also about cost savings.

If you need more screen space, you probably will try to go in for a bigger monitor. Well, it is a rule in technology that bigger and below or above standard products are always going to be more expensive. If majority of the individuals using computers opt for a monitor of a specific size, going in for a computer screen that is a smaller or bigger than the standard sizes going to cost you a lot.

The increase in price is not going to be proportional. Hence, while you may find that standard monitors and accessories are very inexpensive, the price of anything that is above or below standard is going to be disproportionately high. In such a scenario, going in for two monitors instead of a single one and adjusting the size accordingly can help you save a lot of money.

Instead of going in for one single 21″ monitor, you can opt for two 14″ monitors. This is going to work out a lot cheaper than going in for the fancy and bigger monitor. Hence, the dual monitors set-up is not just about style or class alone. It is also about economic sense. If you save money on your set-up, you obviously are going to extract more benefits in the long run.

Of course, you can always separate the two monitors and operate it as if it is a single monitor setup. Hence, you have that extra monitor in hand which can make all the difference to your work in the event of an emergency breakdown.

Why do you need a firewall? Well, why do you have a door in your house? Why you have security systems? Why do you have locks? Why do you respect your privacy? If you know the answers to all these questions, then you have just discovered the answer why you need a firewall as well.

A firewall is not another fancy software that is installed in your computer and which makes no difference to the functionality and performance. Rather, it is one of the most fundamental programs that you can install in your computer today.

The firewall performs the same function as a guard performs in your residential or office complex. It is basically a software that checks whether each and every bit of data entering or going out of your computer is verified, safe and authorized or not.

If you do not want anybody to use a flash drive on your computer, you can set up your firewall in such a manner that it is impossible to use the flash drive to copy data without explicit permission.

From a password based set up to the necessity of disabling the firewall to use a flash drive-there are many ways to ensure that your goal is achieved. People presume that the firewall is essential only if you connect to the internet. Well, protecting your computer from viruses and other malicious programs present on the internet is a must.

However, the basic function of the firewall is to verify each and every bit of data that enters your computer from any and every source. Hence, from the data that is transferred through the local area network to the data that is transferred through a floppy disk or a compact disc – the firewall covers each and every point of entry. Just as you would not build a house without doors, you should not go in for a computer without a good quality firewall.

People come up with the funniest reasons why they do not need a firewall. The most commonly used reason is that using a firewall is a very expensive affair. For many persons, the fact that they never get to use the software program in the same way they get to use other programs like media players and office programs is very irritating.

Such persons feel that not using the program means that they are not enjoying the benefits at all. Well, how many times do you open and close the lock of your house in a day? You will realize that you handle the lock only when you need to secure your house and your belongings. Well, if you do not touch the lock in a single day, does this mean that you are not enjoying its benefit?

Needless to say, adopting the notion that touching a lock is making good use of it is ridiculous. In the same way, not using the software application or not being in a position to tinker with its options and specifications does not mean that you are not getting good value for money. As long as the software program is doing its job properly and as long as you enjoying its benefits, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

The second reason why people do not want to make use of the firewall is that it is not a fixed expense. It is something that they have to incur on an annual basis. Well, if you purchase a firewall and an antivirus software application together, you may have to pay for both simultaneously.

However, you also have the option of going in for completely different set-up which will cost you money just once in your lifetime. Of course, the firewall must be updated on regular basis and hence it is advisable to go in for a solution where you pay an annual basis and get updated versions.

Many people refrain from installing the firewall in their computer because they feel that the software application is too complicated. Well, they simply takes the cake. It is funny that such persons use the Windows operating system because the operating system is also a complicated mechanism.

Of course, individuals get to do whatever they want by simply moving the mouse or clicking the mouse and they feel that the operating system is very simple to use.

However, if you get around trying to configure the operating system, you will find that it is virtually impossible unless you are well versed with computers software programming language.

In any case, you will not be permitted to tinker with the operating system beyond a certain level because it is illegal to do so. Well, the basic problem is that people think that installing the firewall is optional. They feel that security related to computer has been over exaggerated and that it is not such a big risk in the first place.

Well, if you download all sorts of software applications and if you install the same in your computer without a firewall, you are basically inviting all the malicious elements on internet to ravage your computer.

From controlling your operating system to stealing data that you have stored on your hard disk-everything is possible if you do not have a firewall on your computer. The firewall is very effective because it adopts a very simple approach. Rather than trying to identify each and every malicious element and stopping it, it simply controls the point of access.

The point of access, if closed, is next to impossible for the external entity to control. This simple logic has enabled many individuals to store very sensitive data on their computer without any worries. Not installing your firewall is only a big grand invitation for loss of your private data.

Do you take out a submachine gun and a start shooting the moment you see a mosquito or a cockroach in your house? Needless to say, the very idea seems ridiculous. Well, does it make sense to disable your firewall simply because you are not in a position to permit a single software application to access the web?

Web surfers often face this problem after the browser has been updated. The updated version is treated as a completely different program and is not permitted to log onto the web. You may find yourself locked out of your favorite web sites simply because your firewall is behaving in a recalcitrant manner. Well, how can you solve this problem?

The smartest option is to customize your firewall in such a manner that it permits you to manually permit or disallow access to the internet. Once this option is enabled, each and every software application that connects to the internet will ask you for permission. Rather than the firewall taking the decision, the firewall will act as a messenger and will ask you to take a decision.

Once the name of your web browser flashes, you just have to permit the same and instruct the firewall not to ask you again. Once this process is completed, you just need to make the necessary changes to the configuration so that your firewall is back to normal. If you know what you are doing, this process will not take more than ten minutes.

Does it make sense to leave your computer completely unprotected to the malicious elements on the internet just because you want a single program to get access? Certainly not.

Even if this approach does not work, you should log onto the internet using some other resource and find out how to make the necessary changes. This is the reason why it is advisable to buy firewalls in a group.

If you do not have a firewall installed in your corporate network, chances are high that you are putting your entire organization’s intellectual property under high risk. Of course, it is not just a question of safety alone. You probably are losing a lot of money towards taxes as well. Do you know that the money that you spend on your firewall is a deductible expense?

It is related to the safety and security of data in your computers and is certainly allowed as deduction as a business expense. Investing in a firewall and enjoying better safety errors are certainly a smart way of saving taxes.

Financial benefits apart, operating a corporate network without adequate protection in the form of a firewall can be disastrous. You can never use your company’s mail account for confidential transactions. From your profit and loss to your opinion about the latest business opportunities – each and every bit of information can be stolen without access to your office.

Your password to operate your most confidential lockers and safes can be stolen from your computer. Your access to your net banking account can be stolen. The contact information of all your employees including their social security number can be stolen. If you do not opt for sufficient security, you can even be sued by your employees for not caring enough about their safety.

Worst of all, your lack of consciousness towards security will reflect very poorly on your brand image. From your employees to your customers – everybody will be at highest risk until you contact the right person and install the right corporate security network.

The firewall simply happens to be the first line of defense. You will have to go in for many other specifications and configurations to ensure data integrity. Do not delay this decision for even a single second. Get a good quality firewall immediately.

If you are not satisfied with the functionality provided by a free firewall, you can go in for a premium version instead. What are the advantages of premium versions? For starters, you will enjoy a better functionality. Since a commercial organization is developing the software, it will obviously be very easy to use.

The makers of firewalls are well aware that the average individual believes firewalls to be extremely complicated and unwieldy applications. Hence, there is a concentrated effort to simplify the way firewalls are setup. This will make things easier for the average individual.

Most of premium firewalls offer the automated version where each and every component of your system is scanned and predetermined rules and regulations are applied. Hence, all your web browsers and other web related software applications will automatically be provided with the necessary permissions.

In very rare cases will you end up getting blocked and will you find yourself unable to access the web. In such cases, you will have to configure the firewall manually. Most firewalls come with detailed help files that will simplify the task.

Another advantage of going in for premium firewalls is that you get regular updates. It is a common misconception that only antivirus applications require frequent updates. Just as new viruses are being made, newer methods are being discovered to inject the virus into the computer. It is essential to block specific loopholes and weaknesses that individuals have identified in the operating system. For this, you will need frequent updates.

The third advantage of going in for premium firewall is that you get lots of support. From updates in the event of a mass virus break out to tips and hints on how to utilize a firewall better – you will get numerous knowledge options simply by opting for a premium firewall.

How does a firewall work? Despite being very complicated, firewalls have a very simple a logical approach towards securing the computer. The first thing that the firewall checks is the source of the data. If you have executed a command in Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, the outgoing command that is trying to connect with a remote server is analyzed.

Once the firewall identifies that a reputed and well known software application is issuing the command, it will automatically allow the same. The second thing that the firewall analyzes is the route that is used. All computers have ports. These ports can be compared with doors. Port 80 is the most commonly used for all http traffic. As you know, http traffic is what browsers use.

Hence, any command issued by our reputed web browser going through port 80 will be considered legal traffic and will be permitted. Of course, there is a possibility that a virus may have infected your web browser and maybe misusing the same. In such cases, the firewall will be completely useless. You can go in for advanced firewalls but they will be far too expensive and complicated for your day to day requirements.

Combining the firewall with an antivirus software application will ensure that your computer is protected. For starters, the antivirus program will ensure your programs do not get infected with viruses. Secondly, the firewall will ensure that any standalone or third party program does not contact the web without your explicit permission.

You can opt for slightly more advanced firewalls that can be implemented at the individual level. Here, the firewall acts as a proxy and is the sole point of contact between your computer and the internet. All the data received from the internet is routed through the proxy. In the same way, each and every bit of outgoing data reaches the proxy first and is transmitted to the internet by the firewall.

A firewall is essential even if the computer is not going to access the web. If you have office computer and if you want to block access to the internet, you have the option of removing the necessary hardware so that the computer is permanently disabled. However, this option is no different than cutting your hand off simply because you want to stop it from stealing things.

Instead, it makes more sense to adopt a smarter and pragmatic approach. Would it not be wonderful if you would retain the ability to surf the web but could restrict the access based on the authority or status of the individual? If you, the owner of the enterprise, wish to surf the web, you should be permitted to do so.

On the other hand, any other employee wishing to access a social networking website should be blocked. Well, how can a firewall help? You can set the specific configuration that will block all net access. Secondly, you can lock the firewall by installing password protection. This means that making any change to the firewall and its configuration will require a special password.

Just retain the master password in your hand or spread it to all those individuals who should be permitted to access the web. The configuration of the firewall can be altered, the web can be accessed and the firewall can be instructed to revert back to its original state after a specific period of time.

You also have the option of using the firewall to block access to the local area network. If you wish a computer to access the web but not the local area network, you can make the necessary changes accordingly.

Of course, coming up with these configurations will often require detailed knowledge of the functioning of the firewall. You can always make use of the web to get more details and data regarding the same.

One of the least used features in firewall is the log and the monitoring option. Very few individuals bother to revert back to the firewall and analyze their own data download habits. Why is it important? Well, if you have an idea of the average data that you download and upload in a single day, then you can easily identify spikes in download and upload.

If it coincides with certain intensive tasks that you were doing online, then it is perfectly acceptable. However, if you find these spikes at regular intervals without any justification of logical reason, then perhaps you need to look into the setup of your firewall and find out whether any unauthorized software is accessing the web.

Further, you can find out when was the last time any software applications got updated. Is the program normally used to log to the internet? If not, then has specific amount of data has been downloaded in the process? Then perhaps the program was simply updating itself. All these details will help you simplify the administrative tasks involved.

Another advantage of using the firewalls log is that you can educate yourself about the various ports, traffic type and the software applications that access the internet. This may seem like a small thing but can make a huge impact to your overall security. You may be completely ignorant about the various ports used by different software applications.

However, as you spend more and more time checking out the logs, you will automatically start seeing patterns. The idea is not to become an expert. The idea is simply to understand the basics of the functioning of your firewall so that your computer can be protected better. At the end of the day, the intervention of a human being is always going to be beneficial as compared to simply relying on the program for your protection.

If you have not reinstalled your operating system for quite some time, then chances are high that you will have a large number of programs installed on your computer. Further, each and every program will be given the freedom to access the web as and when needed. In such a scenario, identifying a problematic software can become very difficult.

It makes more sense to access the configuration of your firewall and delete each and every program that has been permitted to access the web. Remember, you will not be deleting the software application from your computer. Rather, you will simply be revoking the permission that you have given to each and every program to access the web.

Once this is done, each and every software that connects to the internet will require permission to proceed. If you find certain unknown programs accessing the web, you can restrict your permission and take some time to take a final decision. You can log onto the internet and find out whether certain programs that seem suspicious are actually related to the operating system.

You can find out each and every program’s functionality before proceeding. The idea is to restrict the total number of programs that access the web. The smartest way to achieve this task is to revoke permissions once in a while. If you feel uncertain about taking such a huge risk, you can simply keep track of the programs you have permitted by making a list.

This list should simplify the process. If you find a specific program on the list but if it does not seek your permission again, then you have just eliminated a potential security risk. Each and every individual can carry out these are protective maintenance tasks without any difficulty. All you need is basic understanding of how the firewall works.

Have you decided to purchase a router for your net access? Using a router to regulate your net access can be very beneficial. For starters, it acts as a single point of access for all the computers that are part of your local area network. Secondly, you can easily distribute rights within the local area network and enable individuals to surf the web or access the LAN accordingly.

However, a router comes with an in built firewall and it automatically becomes a very big problem when you use software applications to download files through torrent. Many persons have faced many problems when using torrent software applications with routers. For starters, torrent programs use specific ports to download and upload the data.

You will have to manually unlock the port and enable the routers to keep it open. If you do not do so, you will find that the port forwarding option does not work with torrents. This means that you will never hit top speed and will have to depend on luck to download the files in a short time.

Rather than adopting such an approach, it makes sense to rely on the necessary modifications. The biggest problem with routers is that they do not come with detailed documentation or support like firewalls. Software applications can be analyzed on the internet. On the other hand, accessing router help requires a bit more complicated approach.

You will have to identify the model and check out the help files relevant to the model alone. Further, you will have to find out what others have to say about the problem and you will have to contact those who have the specific model you want. This is the reason why you should focus on those routers that are manufactured by reputed makers. D-Link and Net Gear are two companies that are well known as far as router manufacturing is concerned.
